overlooking Kathmandu valley, Chobar Gorge and Pharping. Dhaksinkali is the most
popular shrine in the valley and also serves as the lineage deity or the
personal deity of the nobles and upper class that is worshipped once a year at
least. Kali - The Black One is fearsome and is believed to be the most powerful
of all Hindu deities. Tuesdays and Saturdays are the best time to witness
devotees worshipping the Goddess so that they are bestowed with blessing and
gifts and even absolvement of sins. On the way or way back a brief stop at
Pharping offers visit to Hindu and Buddhist shrines of Shikhar Narayan Mandir,
Vajra Yogini and Tibetan monasteries with images of Guru Rinpoche. Chobar is an
old Newari village with the legendary gorge that drains the valley. A brief

this old Newari town is full of sculptures and shrines and people dress in
traditional costumes. The town is divided in two sections, the west is Buddhist
and is clustered around the Stupa and the upper town around the pagoda is Hindu.
In between is the famous Bhag Bhairav Temple.
DHULIKHEL
A trip 35 km east of Kathmandu to a hilltop Newari town offers breathtaking
views of the Eastern Himalayan panorama, Nepalese rural life and spectacular and
peaceful countryside. Once a bustling trading village between Kathmandu and
Tibet and the wealth that passed hands here helped construct many impressive
traditional buildings with fine woodcarvings including the shrines of Narayana
and Harisiddhi. Just beyond Dhulikhel is a hill crowned by a Kali Temple, one of
the best sites around for viewing the Himalaya.
KAKANI
Another vantage point to view the central and western Himalaya is Kakani
situated at an altitude of 6000 ft. Northwest of Kathmandu, views from Kakani
include Ganesh Himal, Langtang Himal, Manaslu and Annapurna Himal. The best time
is to start late and wait until sun down. The evening glow of the Himalaya is
beyond belief as the white Himalaya turns yellow to pink and even red after
sundown as long as the rays reflect on the mountains. |
