Langtang is a narrow valley situated south of the Tibetan border. It is
inhabited by Tibetans and Tamangs, who share a similar religion, language and
clothing style. Here, mountains rise soaring towards the sky. The landscapes we
cross are extremely varied; rice- terraces, gigantic rhododendron, pine forest,
and in the highest parts, a rock and shrub wilderness with the fascinating
backdrop of snow capped peaks. The combine trek (Langtang, Gosaikunda and
Helambu) treks offers the great diversity in both nature and culture. It is
relatively not crowded area. The Langtang vally up to Kyanjin Gompa is inhabited
by Tamang whose religious practices, language and dress are much more to those
of Tibetans and we walk to the glacier at the foot of Langtang Peak. Though
there are now many commercial lodges in Langtang village, in another section you
can observe the distinct life style of the original inhabitants in Langtang
village that might be interesting for you I think.
Due to the lack of education these people are very backward in civilization. The
most part of the trail to Gosaikunda Lake is on the ridges of hiking hills
offering spectacular views of Himalayan peaks. This rout connects from Langtang
to Helambu. There are not local inhabitants on the rout to Gosaikunda till 2
days but when we inter to Helambu village we passes some beautiful forests and
very interesting villages of Sherpas and Tamang. The Sherpa are quite distinct
from the Sherpas of Solukhumbu (Everest region) both in language and customs. The
people in Helambu where carefully exploited to a lower cast because of a Nepali
king who was afraid they could give rebellion as they live all around the city
regions. Probably to this result, they still live in backward civilization. The
ranges of mountains that rise above us match the diversity of the people we
meet. From low altitudes we have excellent views of mountains that include
Langtang, the Annapurnas, Manaslu and even Everest on a clear day. This is a
pleasant and exciting journey, a time to relax and become immersed in the beauty
of the Himalayas. |
